PHOTOTHERAPY FOR THE TREATMENT OF JAUNDICE IN NEWBORNS

All four of our children needed phototherapy treatment.  Our mission is to help other parents avoid some of the challenges we faced and learn valuable lessons, many of which we had to learn the hard way.  Click below if you’d like to learn more about biliblankets, hyperbilirubinemia, and our journey.

WHAT IS JAUNDICE?

Jaundice in newborns is common.  The technical term is hyperbilirubinemia which simply means the body has too much (hyper) bilirubin. The liver is responsible for removing bilirubin, however; some newborns liver need to “catch up” on the processing of the excess bilirubin.  Some babies will require treatment to help the body process the excess bilirubin and a biliblanket is a possible solution.  Your baby’s pediatrician will determine if the treatment is necessary and therefore may recommend a machine, called a biliblanket.  We provide phototherapy machines called “BiliBlankets” for the treatment of jaundice in newborns and we are here to serve you and your baby.

We have first-hand knowledge of our children’s doctors notifying us such treatment was necessary.  You can learn more about our story by clicking below.

Frequently asked questions

Here are a few of our most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about BiliBlankets and Neonatal Jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia).

Click below for more FAQs!

ARE BILIBLANKETS SAFE?

The BiliBlanket system is safe to use 24 hours a day for as long as necessary.  Please consult with your baby’s pediatrician for a plan of care.

WHAT DOES A BILIBLANKET DO?

biliblanket is a portable phototherapy device for the treatment of neonatal jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia). BiliBlanket is a trademark of General Electric’s Datex-Ohmeda subsidiary, but its name has become the generic, colloquial term for a range of similar products and the term used in the medical professions.

HOW DO YOU USE PHOTOTHERAPY?

Phototherapy is treatment with a special type of light (not sunlight). It’s sometimes used to treat newborn jaundice by lowering the bilirubin levels in your baby’s blood through a process called photo-oxidation. For more information, see newborn jaundice treatment:

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR PHOTOTHERAPY TO WORK?

It is important that your baby remains under phototherapy lights for as much time as possible each day. When on a biliblanket, your baby can remain on the biliblanket while feeding. Jaundice often takes about two weeks to disappear.
